When this year began there were around 400 resident manatees living in Indian River Lagoon.
As of last week, the official (FWC) data tallies 106 deaths in the IRL alone.
106...more than 25-percent of their population here.
I get ambivalence. I understand apathy. I do not understand standing by, with your hands in your pockets, watching a preventable extinction taking place. Yet, there are people out there who read about the manatee die-off and just kinda shrug their shoulders.
What do you do when you see that apathy from people who live around these gentle giants?
I guess you have two choices. First, you can call them out on their complicit inaction. Or, and this is what I hope we will do here, you show them something that resonates enough to make them feel.
Only caring about the issues will change the issues.
